The "cadavre exquis" or exquisite corpse technique was most used by the Surrealists. Several partners would get together and draw a section of a folded page which would not be seen by the other contributors. Perhaps little more than lead lines would be exposed to the others so one would know where to begin his or her section.

Richard Koch, Steve Jensen, now deceased, and Anthony "Rusty" Zarbo would work on this image type from 1969 to the late 1970s or early 1980s. Richard Koch and Rusty Zarbo came to where they no longer folded their "cadavre" but would just take turns drawing a section until one or the other would say, "Ok - I pass this to you now." The interplay of image in this later technique was astounding and beautiful.

In 1971, Richard Koch and Rusty Zarbo had the good fortune to have met and talked with the Surrealist and official biographer of the movement, Marcel Jean, following a lecture on Surrealism given by Marcel Jean* at the State University of New York at Buffalo. M. Jean would later invite Rusty Zarbo to share his and Rick's creations with him at his one man show at Gimpel-Weitzenhoffer Gallery in New York City. At that time, Rusty Zarbo was 16 years old and did not have the means to attend the opening.
